Preventing malnutrition in later life

How a local charity is ensuring older adults get the support they need to eat well in the community

Age UK BANES Cookery classes 2

In our first case study for Nutrition and Hydration Week, we’re hearing from Age UK Bath and North East Somerset (BANES) about the services they run that support older adults in the community to eat well.

“At Age UK BANES we recognise that adequate nutrition and hydration can be a challenge for older people, be it from medical causes such as difficulty in swallowing, reduced appetite, depression or perhaps a lack of basic cookery skills.

Encouraging older people to eat well and drink enough water every day is a crucial part of the clubs, classes and activities we offer.”

Alongside weekly lunch clubs, Age UK BANES offer Cook and Eat courses – a series of volunteer-led classes teaching older people essential skills to prepare nutritious meals at home.

“Although our Cook and Eat courses are open to everyone, we particularly hope to attract people whose cooking skills are limited or whose nutritional knowledge could do with a brush-up. At the sessions our trained volunteers show clients how to prepare nutritious and delicious food, with everyone sitting down together to eat what they’ve cooked at the end of the session. We hope that people can use and develop the skills they learn at the classes to produce tasty and nutritious meals at home.”

They also offer a Home from Hospital service which includes helping people shop for and prepare food.

“Maintaining good nutrition and hydration is also crucial after a hospital stay to help aid recovery. Age UK BANES offers a free Home from Hospital service for people who may not have someone to help them at home. For the six weeks after discharge we can support older people by cooking a hot meal for them, ensuring that appropriate food is bought for them and that they are eating and drinking properly. If they can’t manage themselves after the six-week period has finished, we can refer them for ongoing support to statutory services or a private meal provider, such as Wiltshire Farm Foods.

We can also arrange assessments with social services, if necessary, to ensure that anyone who needs extra help doesn’t slip through the net.”
